What is Deck Coating?

There really is nothing more relaxing than a weeknight or weekend barbecue and relaxing your deck. The peace and quiet of your backyard with the sounds of your family around you and simply relaxing are the rewards you deserve. Enjoying your backyard and deck really can make the days feel so much more relaxing and enjoyable, so it is worth taking the steps to ensure the longevity of your deck. With effective deck coating and deck waterproofing you can extend the life of your deck and really enjoy it.

There are lots of different types of deck coatings and deck waterproofing techniques out there, so we’ll help you wade through this information and explain to you the basics and benefits of each technique.

Often referred to as desk stains, deck coating is a technique used to protect and enhance your deck. By sealing the wood and protecting it from water absorption, staining, and human spills, you can prolong the life of your deck and also easily keep it clean. Just like when you stain wood chairs, a deck coating brings out the natural colors in the wood and you can also add pigments and dyes to enhance this coloring.

With an effective deck coating, you are able to protect your deck from wood rot and decay – essentially the deck coating process strengthens the natural elements in the wood and prevent premature graying by offering UV protection. To achieve this there are number of deck coating techniques including: solid or opaque deck coatings, semi-solid deck coatings, semi-transparent coatings, and transparent deck coatings.

The solid or opaque process involves a highly pigmented coating that covers the wood similar to the way paint does. This process offers the best UV protection but can peel and wear. A semi-solid deck coating has a high pigment level but is also slightly transparent. This gives you high UV protection and strong penetration into the wood, leaving you with a rich and dark color. Perhaps the most popular type of deck coating is the semi-transparent coating that gives you the perfect balance of optimum UV protection and wood penetration. In addition with this type of stain, your deck retains its natural wood appearance. Because transparent deck coatings have the lowest amount of pigmentation, there is not as much UV protection but the wood absorption and penetration is very high.

So as you can see, there are lots of options for you when it comes to deck coatings. The key to choosing the option that works for you is really considering how you use your deck. Is it a high-traffic area with kids and pets using it? Is your deck in an exposed areas of your yard that gets a lot of sunlight? Also worth considering is the amount of rain we receive here in Southern California. Keeping in mind all of these factors, you can definitely find a solution that keeps your deck looking good while preventing wood rot, decay and graying.

Another way for you to prolong the life your deck and your enjoyment of your backyard is with deck waterproofing. Deck waterproofing is recognized as one of the most effective ways to keep your deck safe from the rotting and decaying properties of water and rain. Using a vinyl membrane that is designed to ensure water protection in high traffic areas and that can withstand the test of time, your deck can be safe from water.
